Information on reporting sick to your employer

You may fall ill at some point. On this page you will find information on how to report sick and what you should look out for at the doctor's.

    • How do I call in sick?

      Clarify how you should report sick. This can be by phone call, message or email, for example. Ask your foreman or boss what they expect.

      Please inform your foreman or boss that you are ill. They will also tell you which doctor you can go to. You can also choose your own doctor. 

    • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

      Go to the doctor

      Take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you to the doctor. This way the doctor won't charge you anything.

      Don't have a card?

      If you have social insurance in your home country, you must show this with an A1 certificate.

      If you are ill, you must give your boss a sick note from a doctor. This sick note is also called a certificate of incapacity for work.

      Continued payment of wages

      If you have worked for an employer for more than 4 weeks, you will continue to receive wages for up to 6 weeks in the event of illness. 

    • Through doctor (D doctor)

      How do I report injuries and accidents?

      Have you injured yourself at work? Tell your foreman or boss. The first aider will take care of your injury. Have the injury recorded in the injury book.

      Through doctor (D doctor)

      Go to a D doctor if you have had an accident at work. Ask your boss or foreman where you can find a D doctor.

    How am I insured in the event of illness?

    Make sure that you have valid health insurance in Germany. For example, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
